Why I’m asking for support now
I’ve lived with HIV for 16 years, and I’ve taken pride in using my own earnings to sustain this work. Over the years, I’ve invested tens of thousands of dollars and thousands of hours in sharing information, building community, and creating what has become RiseUpToHIV.
My circumstances have changed. I’m currently unemployed, navigating health challenges, and at a crossroads as I think about my next job and the direction of my life.
Somewhere along the way, without quite realizing it, I created a full-time job for myself: building and caring for this site. It’s work I believe in, but I need support to keep it going.
Asking for support is uncomfortable for me. But I believe this growing national resource and archive of HIV education, community, and history is worth sustaining. I want it to remain free and available whenever someone needs information, connection, or a place to begin.
If you’re able to contribute, any amount helps keep the site live and its information current. Thank you for helping me carry this work forward.

What the $10,000 helps cover
Build & improve
Help cover the self-funded site build, edits, accuracy checks, accessibility improvements, and new resources.
Reach more people
Promotion and outreach so more people can find and use the site’s education, community spaces, and resources.
Keep it running
Hosting, software, research and development tools, and other short-term operating costs.
Nearly $7,000 of my own money has gone into building and launching the website, separate from earlier spending on RiseUpToHIV’s broader work. Tools and services for maintaining and developing the site currently cost approximately $1,000 per month.
This is one shared goal, not a fixed budget allocation. Earlier personal spending does not count toward the new fundraising total. Read about the site’s purpose.
